About the Minor
Anthropology supports the interdisciplinary and multicultural educational
philosophy of Ramapo College. As such, Anthropology courses constitute
a major component of General Education courses, besides serving the
Anthropology Minor.
In general, Anthropology courses follow the five fields' approach:
physical, archaeological, linguistic, cultural and applied, although
the concentration is on the cultural. The study of Anthropology enhances
the majors of the Humanities, Behavioral Sciences, Social Sciences,
and even the pure sciences, by providing the cultural dimension. Besides,
this cultural dimension enables the student to understand the nature
of one's own culture, as well as that of others.
Important components of Anthropology are presented in an integrated
manner. Some of the courses are: Introduction to Anthropology, Anthropology
of the Family, Anthropology of Women, Psychological/Psychiatric Anthropology
(Self Growth), Anthropology Theory and Field Study, and Peoples and
Cultures of Asia, USA Japan, Africa and Latin America. Other courses
include: Culture of the Native Americans and Prehistory courses drawn
from the Near East and Egypt. In every course, students are required
to write research papers, based on their direct field study and/or
library research.
Although Anthropology is offered as a Minor of 19 credits, the courses
concerned are Core Courses in the discipline of Anthropology. Students
who are interested in Graduate Study in Anthropology can be further
trained through Independent Study. As a whole, Anthropology enhances
the cultural dimension of a student's academic training, whatever
may be her/his major. |
