“Ramapo College will forever be symbolized by autumn for me. It arrived during a period of rapid change in my life and remained constant, providing a sense of stability when I needed it most. Whether it was the comfort of knowing I had a place to grow or simply my love for sitting under the arch during the fall season, Ramapo always felt like home, even as a commuter.
I completed my biology degree and teacher education minor at Ramapo, where I was surrounded by support during my school-based observations, student mentor/mentee paired program, and cooperative teaching experience. This support was instrumental in helping me secure a job right away, as districts were able to observe my teaching firsthand. I am deeply grateful for these opportunities, which laid the foundation for my career.
While teaching, I was fortunate to be accepted into a National Endowment for the Humanities summer institute. This experience allowed me to create environmental lessons while staying at Ramapo College and exploring the Hudson River. When I felt the need for a new challenge, I knew I could return to my Ramapo roots to pursue my Master’s Degree in Educational Technology. This program provided me with the resources and tools to become the go-to person for technology in my past districts.
Currently, I serve as the Supervisor of Math & Science at Passaic County Technical Institute STEM Academy, where we’ve achieved top rankings in the state and lead in science scores within our county. I attribute much of my success to the holistic approach to education that has always been a hallmark of Ramapo College. A fellow Ramapo graduate, who is a teacher in my department, shared this opportunity to reflect as an alumna. We know how amazing the experience was and are happy to share that with others.
Outside of work, I find joy in singing, painting, and anything that allows me to express my creativity. Ramapo College played a pivotal role in shaping both my professional and personal life, and I am deeply thankful for the experiences and growth it provided.” – Kimberly Salma ’08 ’11 graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with a minor in Education.
