“The most important thing I learned while attending Ramapo was to stand out from the crowd. As a student, I was an active leader on campus, which helped me develop the confidence and skills needed to make my mark as a professional. My professors always encouraged me to excel in the classroom and to make the personal connections that would benefit my professional goals. My education at Ramapo certainly prepared me for the real world.” – Alexa Marques ’14 graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Environmental Studies and a double-minor in Environmental Science and Public Policy. Alexa was awarded Outstanding Leadership by a Senior during her time at Ramapo.
While at Ramapo, Alexa created her own internship at Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park where she conducted an ecological bird study, the first in the park’s history. She was also the co-project manager of her senior capstone class, the Sustainable Living Facilities Student Coordinator, Vice President of 1STEP (Students Together for Environmental Progress), and an environmental education assistant at the Meadowlands Environment Center. Alexa was awarded the Herbert Wortreich Award for Environmental Studies by the Ramapo College Provost, the Kurt and Anny Landsberger Award for Environmental Studies, and received Dean’s list recognition for all six semesters she attended Ramapo.
Alexa is currently the executive director of Teaneck Creek Conservancy, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring a 46-acre eco-art park in Teaneck, New Jersey. Alexa’s responsibilities include managing a unique urban forested wetland habitat, creating programs in various disciplines (such as art, history and the environment), and working collaboratively with various environmental groups across Bergen County as the chair of the Nature Program Cooperative. Alexa invites current Ramapo students to Teaneck Creek for internship, case study, and club opportunities. Alexa received a graduate assistantship from Montclair State University where she recently completed a Master of Arts in Environmental Studies: Environmental Management and a Master of Science in Sustainability Science.
