“Ramapo’s liberal arts educational program gives you the opportunity to learn from experts in their fields and to have personal interactions with peers. It is a commitment to producing well-rounded adults capable of adapting to our modern society. I was something of a nontraditional student, so the value of my undergraduate experience was less about my experience with other students (although I’m still best friends with my roommate) and more focused on the development of empathy and the skills to apply that empathy to make an impact in our world. There were key moments in Ramapo classrooms that challenged my worldview and encouraged me to recognize the patterns of power, class, race and gender I see repeated again and again in society today. Could I have learned these things eventually on my own? Certainly, but those lessens would not have come so easily, nor would they have allowed me to explore my feelings and share those of others in a meaningful and beneficial way.” – Melissa McGrath ’14 graduated with a double major in History and Literature and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. She earned her M.S. in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management from Kent State University in 2017. While at Ramapo, she was involved as Treasurer of Phi Alpha Theta (International History Honors Society), in Sigma Tau Delta (English Honors Society), and in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
