“Being a part of the 4+1 MASE program at Ramapo College is one of the greatest choices I made for my college experience.

The MASE program allows students to gain valuable experiences in both the general education and special education worlds. A big part of the MASE program is the community that is formed. The professors in the MASE program are so supportive and knowledgeable on all aspects of teaching.  The advisors and professors connect with you as a person, not just a student. They are constantly there with advice and ways to help you advance not only as a teacher but also as a person. Additionally, the community provided me with friendships with my peers, who also served as a true support system throughout the process. The MASE community is filled with experience, knowledge, and connections.

As a student in this program, I gained valuable knowledge and experience with both general and special education students, learned how to best differentiate instruction and meet learners needs, teach multiple subjects and grade levels, as well as strategies to connect to your learners and build relationships.

In addition, the MASE program prepared me for the job application process including how to write a cover letter and resume that will display your valued experiences, completing mock interviews with professors and advisors, and other important tips on how to apply and present yourself to future employers!

The director of the program, Dr. Julie Norflus-Good, truly invests in each one of the MASE students and ensures success regardless of the pace or path you need to take. As a member of the College Honors Program as well, Dr. Good mentored me in writing my Honors Thesis. For this thesis I was able to write about  game night that the MASE program hosted for students with diverse learning needs. This project allowed me to connect to the community, as well as advance my academics. This program is truly remarkable in the amount of support and knowledge available to each and every student.” – Megan Furbush ’22 ’23 graduated with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education and her Master’s of Arts in Special Education.
