“When I started the MSW program I had an idea of which population I wanted to work with and what my career path I was striving for. As I moved through the coursework, I realized that social work is more complex than spending an hour with someone and listening to his or her struggles. The first things that are taught within the program is how to hone your empathetic skills and understand cultural diversity. As a woman of color, this was refreshing to know that I am valued as a person and that competence was key in the work we do. As I am nearing the end of my Ramapo career, I have learned a tremendous amount of knowledge about my profession and about myself that will last me a lifetime and generate a life-long passion for learning.
In my final year as an MSW student, I have had the opportunity to help build a non-profit Food Pantry within the school. This experience has allowed me to witness the inner workings of bureaucratic policy and advocacy of the college. It has also given me the experience in making a difference to those students who are most disenfranchised by society and to create a positive school environment as well as a successful academic experience.” – Tiffany Minnieweather ’19 graduated with her Master of Social Work.
