“When I look back at my years at Ramapo, I realize what a diverse education I received in HGS. I was given the flexibility not only to major in International Studies, but also minor in Spanish Language, Political Science and Human Rights & Genocide Studies. I spent the spring semester of my sophomore year in Sevilla, Spain, and can honestly say it was the greatest experience of my life. I lived with a host family and was able to get the full Spanish experience, which included the fabulous traditional Spanish food, learning how to dance the Sevillanas in our living room and celebrating Feria de Abril. In addition, my Spanish improved ten-fold over those four months and I have much more confidence in my Spanish-speaking abilities. I also traveled to England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal and Germany along with extensive travel within Spain. I found that I grew so much as a person, gaining an incredible amount of self-confidence and self-reliance.
As I worked on my graduate degree this past year, I utilized a great deal from what I learned as an undergraduate. The inspiration for my graduate dissertation was a book I originally read in a class at Ramapo. The foundation I built at Ramapo allowed me to get the most of my graduate degree program.” – Nora Dougherty ’12 graduated with a B.A. in International Studies and her study abroad experience in Spain directly contributed to her winning a Fulbright award to serve as an English Teaching Assistant in Spain.
