Study & Intern Abroad

Emily Gang

NSE – InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico – San German, Puerto Rico (spring 2014)

ISA – Universitat de Valencia – Valencia, Spain (summer 2013)

Hola, my name is Emily and I’m a Spanish Language Studies major in the Teacher Education Program! I had the opportunity to participate in 2 different types of programs: an ISA summer program in Valencia, Spain and a National Student Exchange program in San Germán, Puerto Rico. I was also fortunate enough to be able to teach English abroad through the CCEC’s Alternative Break Program and a volunteer program in Costa Rica. I am passionate about study abroad because of the positive effects it has on a person’s life and education. Personally, I was determined to increase my proficiency through immersion. However, I also became a bit of a “culture vulture” through the exposure I received, specifically in 2 courses: “Spanish Culture: History, Art, and Tradition” and “Historical Process of Puerto Rico.” Learning about a country or region’s history while living in it allowed me to observe firsthand the effects of the historical events that occurred, as well as the influence of other cultures on the country.  Studying abroad is an extremely rewarding but challenging experience.  I would advise someone who is studying abroad to step out of their comfort zone. Introduce yourself to locals when you go out. Try foods that are native to the region. Go to local events, festivals, and historical sites. Participate as much as possible in things that are new to you so that you can learn more about your host country’s culture. As a Global Roadrunner, I would like to offer Ramapo students advice from my own experiences as well as an understanding of the resources available to them during the study abroad application, experience, and re-entry.
