Here is a list of hashtags /campaigns used on campus by the College’s main accounts and related College accounts. We recommend sticking with one to two hashtags maximum per post for X; multiple hashtags can be used for Instagram. Use general hashtags sparingly on X (examples: #ClassOf2024 or #resumes) because they typically don’t tap into an RCNJ audience.
The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a post. It was created organically by social media users as a way to categorize messages. Merriam Webster defines a hashtag as “a word or phrase preceded by the symbol # that classifies or categorizes the accompanying text” often for a X post or Instagram post.
While some hashtags contain capital and lower case letters, this is only done for stylized purposes to make the hashtag easier to read – it makes no difference between #RamapoCollege and #ramapocollege.
By using a hashtag, X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram users can focus a conversation on a certain topic/campaign or look into what others are saying about that topic/campaign. Once a hashtag is written in a post/status, it becomes “clickable” – meaning it becomes a hyperlink you can click on to view a feed of posts containing the hashtag. Usually, for brands or companies, hashtags are used to encourage and drive engagement with fans and followers. In Ramapo’s case, we try to engage a variety of audiences: prospective students, current students, alumni, parents and family, and the community. To increase the success and awareness of certain hashtags, we cross-promote them in social media posts on several social media channels. The most effective hashtags tend to be shorter, easy to read, and connected or related in some way to the College.
If you have an idea for creating a new hashtag or running a campaign, please email socialmedia@ramapo.edu for review, strategy tips, and approval.
