The Verizon Foundation focuses its grant-making on the issues of education/literacy and safety/health. “Our goal is to help people achieve the skills they need to live, learn and work in the 21st century,” writes Patrick Gaston, President of the Verizon Foundation. In the area of education/literacy, grant making targets student achievement, regardless of the student’s age.
“We also recognize that students of different abilities will play a key role in society and in our business,” says Diana Vargas, an executive in Verizon’s corporate human resources office in Basking Ridge, NJ. “This scholarship program allows Verizon to give studens with disabilities the recognition they deserve.” At Ramapo, the Verizon Scholarships benefit students registered with the Office of Specialized Services. Recipients must be enrolled in a Business major or Computer Science, fields which have direct relevance to Verizon’s core business values. Recipients must also be from states served by the company.
Jordan Richards of Maplewood, NJ is a Computer Science major with a 3.20 grade point average. Jordan’s minor is Visual Arts with a concentration in Photography. Jordan is involved with A Better Tomorrow, Ramapo Operation Link Up, The Computer and Technology Club, Mackin Hall Residence Council and is an Admissions Student Ambassador. “Knowledge is the key to achieving a certain dream,” he said. “Even if you learn one new thing a day, it takes you one step closer to any goal.” Jordan plans to work creating software that will aid students with learning disabilities. “No goal or dream can be realized all by one’s self,” he added. “I would like to say thank you to the Ramapo College Foundation for providing a helping hand.”
Courtney Evan of Brick, NJ is an Accounting major with a 3.56 grade point average. “After graduation I will be working full time for Wilkin & Guttenplan, PC, a public accounting firm, and I plan to sit and study for the CPA Exam,” Courtney says. At Ramapo Courtney is treasurer of Donate Life of Ramapo College, and is a member of the Accounting Club, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is also active with Theta Phi Alpha sorority.
Nicholas Daquila is majoring in Information Systems and has earned a 3.26 grade point average. He is a senior from New Providence, NJ. Nicholas attended Union County College and Purdue University before enrolling at Ramapo.
Marni Sucher is majoring in Information Science and has earned a 3.10 grade point average. “ I work as a phone-a-thon associate in the Birch Mansion and also was counselor at an overnight camp in summer of 2012,” Marni reports. She is from East Brunswick, NJ.
David Romero is a junior from Oakland, NJ. He is majoring in Business Administation and has earned a 2.72 grade point average.
“I have been a member of the Accounting Club since freshman year and I participated in the Stock Trading Competition in 2011,” says Marissa Mittiga. Marissa is a junior majoring in Accounting, and plans to complete an internship before she graduates. She has earned a 2.95 grade point average. Marissa is from Manalapan, NJ.
Being recognized for this scholarship encourages me to achieve my goal to become a CPA.
Anna Pickoff-White attended Middlesex County College before becoming a Ramapo College student. She is a junior majoring in Computer Science and has earned a 3.58 grade point average. Her minor is Creative Writing. Anna is from Piscataway, NJ.
Patrick Cua of Glen Rock, NJ is a Finance major. “I am finishing my Economics major as well,” he says, “And I am committed to gaining as much knowledge in business as I can.” A senior, Patrick has a 3.77 grade point average and plans to attend graduate school to earn an MBA.
Anthony Gatti is a senior from Ridgewood, NJ. Anthony is an Information Systems major who has earned a 3.15 grade point average.
Brian Aceti is a senior majoring in Accounting who has earned a 3.03 grade point average. Brian was vice president of the Study Club on campus, and is a DJ for WRPR, the Ramapo radio station. He is from Pine Brook, NJ.
Ryan Wilson of Demarest, NJ is an Accounting major. His goal is to become a CPA. Ryan was named to the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society, Golden Key International Honour Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Dean’s List and Alpha Lambda Delta. He also serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council in the Anisfield School of Business and is proud of the Council’s involvement in the school’s accreditation process. “I believe it is extremely important for undergraduates to have work experiences to gain exposure to our global community.” Toward that end, Ryan’s worked as an accounting intern, an English teacher assistant in Chile and participated in a Deloitte Career Building workshop. Ryan, who has a 3.83 grade point average, is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Jessica Waxenbaum of Mahwah, NJ is a Business Administration major with a concentration in Management. During her junior year she became a community assistant for the College Park Apartments. One of her favorite aspects of the job is to help students have a satisfying experience at Ramapo. In this position Jessica has learned new skills, how to structure her study time and to challenge herself. She’s also held positions as a notetaker, student aide, summer resident assistant and a business management intern for the Mahwah Museum. Jessica, who has a 3.59 grade point average, looks forward to graduating with honors and pursing an MBA.

Scott Sobol is majoring in Communication Arts with a concentration in Design and Interactive Media. He is a senior who has earned a 3.49 grade point average. “I work at the Lien Resolution Group doing website design and graphic design,” Scott reports. He also volunteers in the Information Technology department at Nyack Hospital and at The School for Adaptive and Integrative Learning at Ferncliff Manor. Scott is from New City, NY.
An Information Systems major, Ivan Kera has completed an internship at the Ferolie Group, a food broker that provides sales and marketing services for packaged food and packaged goods companies. He hopes to work in the computer industry and perhaps teach in his field. Ivan, who has a 3.58 grade point average, says “With my hard work and the help of my wife, I received an associate degree in Computer Science from Bergen Community College.” He is from Montvale, NJ.
Christopher Mignone is a Business Administration major with a concentration in Marketing. He is the director of Finance and Operations for the Residence Halls Association and formerly served as the group’s vice president. Christopher is a member of Tau Delta Phi and served as director of professional development for Phi Alpha Delta, the pre-law fraternity. Christopher plans to enter a career development program when he graduates. “This scholarship has provided the opportunity to gain more exposure in the business field,” he says. Christopher is from Whippany, NJ.
This scholarship has provided me with, not only financial assistance, but opened the door for several networking opportunities.
James Orchard attended County College of Morris and received an associate of science degree before attending Ramapo College. He is a Business Administration major concentrating in Finance, with an Accounting minor. James is a member of the Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society. Last season he coached high school students in shotput during the winter track season. James works in the accounts payable department of JHO Realty and plans to become a budget analyst. He is from Dover, NJ.
The scholarship I have received will allow me to continue my education. I will use this education to become valuable to a company, so both the company and I will benefit greatly.
Eric Rittenhouse of Monmouth Junction, NJ, a previous recipient, spent a semester in London where he studied at The University of Westminster. “I have grown not only academicially through coursework, but also culturally, living in one of the greatest cities in the world.” He was named to the Dean’s List and is active in the Accounting Club, the Outdoors Club, intramural bowling and works in his family’s insurance agency. The Accounting major, who plans to take the CPA exam, has a 3.22 grade point average.
Christopher Lowenhaupt of Hillsborough, NJ is a senior majoring in Computer Science. He works in the Office of Specialized Services’ AssistiveTechnology Lab and is the assistant captain of the Ultimate Frisbee team. While he takes great pride in the team’s success, placing fourth in a nationwide coed tournament in Georgia, he is most proud of making the Dean’s List and completing his third summer internship with the Naval UnderseaWarfare Center in Rhode Island. Christopher, who has a 3.17 grade point average, says, “I know if I work hard and do my best, I will find a way to be successful.”

Samuel Goldberg moved to the United States from Israel when he was a junior in high school, a time when most students here are in college crunch mode. He quickly learned to navigate a different educational system and language. The senior, who is an Accounting major and an Honors student, has a grade point average of 3.77. The Fair Lawn, NJ resident works part-time as a math and Hebrew tutor and teacher. Samuel plans to attend law school when he graduates.
The generous Verizon Foundation scholarship I received relieved me of substantial expenses.This allowed me to dedicate more to my studies, and achieving a near perfect GPA. This, in turn, provides me with an advantage as I apply to law schools, which shall surely advance my goal of becoming a lawyer.
Sarah Warren, a Business Administration/ Finance major from Belle Mead, NJ is passionate about her studies and humanitarian causes. The senior, who has a grade point average of 3.84, is proud of her induction into Delta Mu Delta National Business Honor Society. As president of the Operation Smile Student Association, she helped organize numerous fundraisers. Sarah believes it is imperative to make a difference through action and particularly enjoys working as a tutor for the Office of Specialized Services.
