Gus Vasiliadis led an extraordinary life. A first generation Greek American, Gus completed his B.A. at Yale University with a French and English Literature degree and Music minor. Following graduation in 1952, Gus enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea. After hostilities ended, he was promoted to Sargent and managed twelve U.S. Officer’s Clubs, presenting U.S.O. shows that featured Hollywood luminaries.
After the war, Gus attended the Juilliard School of Music and joined Columbia Artists to manage the Community Concerts division. In 1958, he married Therissa Elliott, mother of his three daughters, Lisa (Pella), Thera (Marshall), and Irene Vasiliadis (deceased in childhood).
Therissa Elliott surprised Gus with a wedding present of a Steinway grand piano model B – a “gift” that Gus shared with Prof. Lisa Lutter included a bank loan – but insured that their home and the lives of their extended family, friends and community always included music.
In 1962, Gus was hired by Lincoln Center to join the executive team for education and development. Throughout his life, Gus actively served on prominent executive and philanthropic boards. In 1982, Gus married Susan Stewart, the managing director of the Pro Arte Chorale. They enjoyed a rich life of music, philanthropy and family.
Gus’s life – and concert-going – was accompanied by his beloved German Shepherds, a series of seven. He was most proud of his pioneering work with the Hackensack University Medical Center Pet Therapy Program. Gus celebrated his long tenure as an organist and choir director, until the age of 81, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hillsdale, NJ.
Gus was a generous and supportive member of the Friends of Ramapo and Ramapo Choral Program. Just a few months prior to his death, he attended the Friends of Ramapo and CantaNOVA concert in the York Room. Gus shared with long-time friend Lisa Lutter that he had always dreamed that Ramapo College would fully develop opportunities for students and community members to perform and experience great music. The establishment of this scholarship, together with his generous gift of his Steinway model B piano to Ramapo College, will continue to fulfill his vision.
The Gus Vasiliadis Music Performance Scholarship will benefit students who are pursuing piano and/or chamber music.
