Deirdre Bright Memorial Scholarship

Colleagues of Assistant Dean of Nursing Dr. Kathy Burke started this scholarship in memory of Dr. Burke’s sister, Deirdre, who passed away in 2021. To honor Deirdre’s 30-year career in the travel industry, this scholarship is intended to help a nursing student with costs associated with a study abroad experience.

2025 Recipient

Melina Stamatiou

Melina Maria Stamatiou of Westwood, N.J. is a Nursing major with a minor in Spanish Language Studies and a concentration in Spanish for Healthcare and Human Services Professionals. She has a 3.886 GPA and has made the Dean’s List every semester.

At Ramapo, she has been active in several organizations including the Nursing Student Organization, Peer Facilitation, Spanish Club, and First to mARCH organization. Recently, she and her co-community service chair of the Nursing Student Organization held a Bone Marrow Drive to inform students how they can save a life through donating bone marrow.

Melina has also been involved in off-campus activities including being a volunteer at the Valley Hospital in Paramus, N.J. and as a TaeKwonDo instructor at her school she has been training at for over thirteen years.

After graduation, Melina plans to work in a hospital as a Pediatric Oncology Nurse and to go back to school after obtaining experience in the field. She wants to obtain her Masters of Science in Nursing to become a Nurse Practitioner.


2022 Recipient

Katherine Morales

Katherine Morales of Paterson, N.J. is a junior Nursing major with a 3.8 GPA. She is proud of being a first generation college student and receiving the Outstanding Leadership by a First-Year Student Award.

At Ramapo, Katherine is involved with the Nursing Student Organization, CAC/RelayforLife, and she is a Ramapo Admissions Student Ambassador. Off campus, she works with House on the Hill and is becoming an ENHANCE Peer Mentor. 

After she graduates, Katherine plans on becoming a Registered Nurse and becoming more advanced in Spanish. She will most likely continue her studies to become a Nurse Practitioner.
