Ramapo College Offers Summer Academic and Life Skills Camps for High School Students—Information Sessions Scheduled

MAHWAH, N.J.— High school students may now register for the full-day summer academic and life skills programs offered at Ramapo College of New Jersey. They include Band & Choir Camp, CompTIA A+ Certification & Computer Camp, Financial Literacy/Stock Market Trading Program, Game Design for Teens, SAT Prep Plus College Immersion and Self Defense Mini-Camp. Ramapo College’s new Band & Choir Camp offers opportunities for high school instrumentalists and singers to perform in ensembles this summer. Students perform in either concert band or chorale, study musicianship, and choose from music performance electives such as Brazilian drumming, music improvisation, technique for singers or percussion ensemble. All participants showcase their talents in a finale performance open to families and friends. The program runs July 13-24, 2015. Information Session: April 21, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

The new CompTIA A+ Certification & Computer Camp at Ramapo College offers high school students with interest and who bring some information technology knowledge and experience, the opportunity to prepare for certification this summer. This international, vendor neutral certification is the first step in becoming an IT professional and may be achieved at the high school level. Students not interested in pursuing certification but who are interested in learning how computers work, are also welcome. Information Sessions: April 26, 1-2 p.m. and June 9, 7-8 p.m.

The Financial Literacy/Stock Market Trading Program for high school students utilizes the college’s Global Financial Markets Trading Laboratory in the Anisfield School of Business, which is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). In the morning session (9 a.m.-noon), participants learn about budgeting and finances to prepare them for making sound financial decisions in the future. In the afternoon session (1-4 p.m.), students participate in simulated trading games and competitions as they buy, sell and trade to build their own stock portfolios in the Trading Lab, an authentic stock market trading room complete with an electronic ticker display carrying financial data from multiple world markets. Information Sessions: April 22, 5:30-6:30 p.m. and May 31, 1-2 p.m.

Participants in the Game Design for Teens program are introduced to a variety of game design concepts including level construction, character design and gameplay mechanics, using Adobe Flash, Adobe Photoshop and ActionScript 3.0 to conceive, design and make functional games for the Web. Students learn design standards and user experience theory, including HTML5 integration, and apply this knowledge to individual projects. Each student’s culminating project will incorporate personal style with programming to create a fully functional online game. Information Sessions: April 19, 4-5 p.m., and May 20, 7-8 p.m.

The Princeton Review SAT Prep Plus College Immersion program is for entering 11th and 12th graders. The program includes four proctored SATs with detailed computer analysis of the results, 11 practice tests for the SAT and PSAT, extra online lessons, special college admissions seminars and more. Two sessions are held: July 13-23, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. or August 10-20, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

The new Self Defense Mini-Camp is an active self-defense program where students learn how to be aware of their surroundings and how to combat personal attacks. This life skills class is designed specifically for high school-age youth to provide them with the practical tools necessary to protect themselves with confidence and determination. The techniques taught are practical in execution and are easily acquired regardless of athletic ability. The program runs Monday-Friday, July 6-17, 9-11 a.m., and there is a swim option following the program.

The Ramapo College of New Jersey youth/pre-college programs are directed by the College’s Center for Innovative and Professional Learning. The Center supports postgraduate professional education, workforce development and alternative learning. The Center also engages in internal and external educational partnerships to advance the College, and provides innovative continuous learning opportunities for community members of all ages.
