(Mahwah) — Hovering Journey, a one-person exhibition by symbolic painter Vivienne Thaul Wechter, Fordham University artist-in-residence, will open in the Kresge Gallery at Ramapo College of New Jersey Friday, March 3. A reception is scheduled beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a screening of Thunderbolt, a documentary of Wechter’s life and work by Donna Cameron, at 7 p.m.
Though it is well known that she has a gift for words, she also is able to broadcast to us from areas where words are of no avail . . . and what is more, her wordless messages come to us through the medium of a vital and abundant talent,” wrote the late Robert Beverly Hale, curator, American Paintings and Sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Professor, painter, sculptor and poet, Wechter has been widely exhibited in this country and abroad. Her work is included in collections at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Fine Art in Houston, the Rose Museum in Brandeis, MA, the Hudson River Museum and the United Nations in New York City, among many others.
Vivienne Thaul Wechter is an original, intense, expressive lyrical abstract painter possessed of an imagination that sights the unusual. She is a recognized and respected presence in the modern art world,” says Henry Riseman, director of the New England Center for Contemporary Art. She also is an award-winning writer of poetry and prose, whose work has been published in books, journals and exhibit catalogs.
The exhibit will run through March 17. The Kresge Gallery is located in the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts. For more information, please call (201) 684-7147.
