(Mahwah) – Dr. Henri Lustiger-Thaler, associate professor of sociology at Ramapo College of New Jersey, was named president of the International Sociological Association’s Research Committee on Social Classes and Social Movements.
In conjunction with his appointment, he is organizing two conferences: a regional conference on Asian Movements,” to be held at Hitosubashi University in Tokyo July 2 and 3; and the International Institute of Sociology conference scheduled July 7 to 11 in Beijing. In addition, Thaler was invited to join the Editorial Board of the Monograph Series of Current Sociology. During his tenure as president of the Research Committee, his goals are to increase membership, reach out to student groups, and create more institutional relationships between research universities and those colleges and universities focused on teaching.
The author of five books on social movements, globalization, and youth and urban movements, Thaler has two books coming out in 2003: Rhetoric and Actors and In Search of the Subject. In addition, he has written numerous peer-reviewed articles and chapters in books on the issues stated above, as well as those associated with collective memory in post-war Germany.
Thaler earned a B.A. degree from Loyola College, an M.A. from Carleton University and a Ph.D. from the Université de Montréal. He completed post-doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge, Kings College (Faculty of Social and Political Sciences). In addition to his position at Ramapo College, he has held visiting professorships at Dartmouth College and at the University of Rome at La Sapienza.
