(MAHWAH) – Dr. Robert A. Scott, president of Ramapo College of New Jersey, has named Jane B. Stein the first director of the College’s new Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts. As director of the Berrie Center, Stein is charged with shaping the direction of public programming, developing and implementing the Center’s annual marketing and audience development plan, and overseeing management of the facility, which includes the 350-seat Sharp Theater, the 100-seat Adler Theater and two art galleries. She also will be teaching a hands-on undergraduate course on arts presenting, beginning in the spring 2000 semester, enabling students to learn first-hand about the process of bringing artists to audiences.

Stein, who earned her MBA degree in marketing from Bernard Baruch Graduate School of Business at City University of New York, brings to the position more than 20 years of experience in educational and public arts programming and presenting, as well as expertise in public and media relations, marketing, development, public affairs and advocacy. An active member of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters, Stein comes to Ramapo from The Newark Museum, where she was coordinator of public programs. In that position, she organized and presented more than 100 arts programs annually including concerts, musical theater and scholarly panel discussions, and was on the board of the groundbreaking Newark Black Film Festival. Under her direction the Newark Museum’s noted Summer Jazz in the Garden Series brought internationally renowned jazz musicians to Newark. She will work to create a strong jazz presence at the Berrie Center.

Prior to her appointment at The Newark Museum, Stein was assistant coordinator of public events and programs at The Montclair Art Museum; director of public relations for the School District of Maplewood and South Orange; and national media and marketing director for the National Council of Jewish Women. In addition, she has served as a public relations consultant to a number of prominent arts organizations and private corporations.

ABOUT THE BERRIE CENTER

Both a teaching facility and a community resource, Ramapo College’s Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts offers a diverse schedule of exciting programs – from exhibitions of cutting-edge contemporary art, private collections and student work, to presentations of jazz and classical music, tap dancing and ballet by top performers. Theatrical events include Shakespeare and plays recently staged off-Broadway. Outreach efforts include special programs for families and schooltime performances for elementary students.

Among the upcoming highlights of the fall 1999 schedule is a performance by irreverent singer/songwriter Dan Bern, who returns to the College following last year’s standing-room-only concert, on Wednesday, November 3. The one-woman show The Oral Tradition of the Oral Tradition, starring Shona Tucker, traces the coming-of age-journey of an African-American woman who travels to Nigeria, presented Thursday and Friday, December 2 and 3. The Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra, featuring Guarneri String Quartet founding member John Dalley as the soloist, performs works by Gershwin, Dvorák and Mozart on Saturday, December 4. Blues in the Night features members of the Musical Theater Workshop, directed by Professor David Welch, in a tribute to the late, great songwriter Harold Arlen, on Tuesday, December 7. Shakespearean plays include The African Company Presents Richard III from October 28th November 6 and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, onstage November 11-20. Admission to many of the programs is free.

Located at 505 Ramapo Valley Road in Mahwah, the Berrie Center is easy to reach via the Garden State Parkway or Route 287. For information about the Center’s inaugural season, including a complete schedule of events, call (201) 684-7202.
