(Mahwah) – Ann Hampton Callaway, nationally renowned for the song The Nanny Named Fran, which she wrote and performed for the CBS television comedy show, will perform in the Sharp Theater on the campus of Ramapo College of New Jersey on Saturday, September 18 at 8 p.m.
Callaway is one of the most widely acclaimed cabaret singer/songwriters in music today. She has appeared as a special guest artist with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and has performed on Broadway in Swing, for which she received a Tony nomination for best featured actress in a musical. She has also appeared on numerous television shows including Oprah, Rosie, The Today Show and Larry King Live.
The Chicago native has been called a honey-voiced singer and has moved increasingly from pop standards into jazz. A skillful songwriter, she made her name in piano bars improvising songs from audience suggestions. Barbra Streisand, Callaway’s idol, recorded one of her compositions, At The Same Time. At Streisand’s request, Callaway wrote lyrics to a Rolf Lovland melody entitled I’ve Dreamed Of You,” which was sung by Streisand to James Brolin at their wedding. Callaway’s recent CD Signature features the signature songs of jazz legends of the 20th century, performed with pianist Kenny Barron and guest artist Wynton Marsalis.
Tickets are $24 for adults, $22 for seniors and $15 for youth. The Sharp Theater is located in the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for the Performing and Visual Arts. For tickets or information, call 201.684.7844.
This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment of the Arts.
