(Mahwah) – Dr. Trent Schroyer, a professor of sociology-philosophy at Ramapo College of New Jersey, co-edited, along with Tom Golodik, Creating A Sustainable World: Past Experience/Future Struggle.
Creating a Sustainable World is a collection of essays that reconstructs the original Earth Summit events from 1992 and its follow-up 10 years later, and critiques sustainable development as a corporate ideology. The collection also describes an emerging world sustainability movement with proposals for the widening of the sustainability discourse and reforms. The book provides cultural and economic models for a sustainable world and presents the principles of a new field of ecological economics as the appropriate frame for measuring how economic activity is part of the earth’s organic order and subject to its constraints.
The book includes many case studies of the diverse and concrete experiences now underway, as well as self-reflections written by those working in the field of sustainability. Schroyer authored six essays in the book, published by The Apex Press.
Schroyer joined the Ramapo College faculty in 1973. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he was co-director of the College’s Institute for Environmental Studies. He also helped organize a series of conferences on sustainability and continues to work and write on these issues.
Since 1988 Schroyer has participated in networks of international scholars and citizen’s organizations concerned with sustainability, alternative economic strategies and cultural alternatives to development. He served as program coordinator and president of The Other Economic Summit (TOES) for the counter G-8 summits in the United States in 1990, 1997 and 2004.
