(MAHWAH, NJ) – A one-person exhibition of landscape works by Gabriel Tempesta will open at Ramapo College on January 30 in the Pascal Gallery. There will be an opening reception on January 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. An artist’s talk will begin at 6:30 p.m. The exhibition continues on view through March 6.
Gabriel Tempesta creates haunting black and white paintings of the New England landscape using charcoal and casein on board. He will also be showing works on paper made with a method of mixing charcoal and water which is brushed onto the surface and then removed with erasers and other tools. Tempesta works from photographs and prefers a black and white palette because of the way it lends a direct simplicity to the image.
Tempesta received a BFA in illustration from Montserrat College of Art in 2002. After a number of years producing illustration work, he somewhat spontaneously switched the focus of his career to fine art. Being born and raised in Vermont has deeply influenced his painting. “I am incredibly moved by the visual poetry in the trees, wildlife, and fields that surround me, and look to capture and celebrate that in my artwork,” says Tempesta.
This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Pascal Gallery is located in the Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts at Ramapo College. Hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday, 1 to 7 p.m. For more information call (201) 684-7147.
