(Mahwah) – So Far, So Good, a retrospective view of the photographs of David Freund, 1971-2006, will open in the Kresge and Pascal Galleries on the campus of Ramapo College Wednesday, March 28 and continue through April 27. An opening reception and artist’s talk will be held March 28 from 5 – 7 p.m.
Freund, a visual arts professor at Ramapo College, has long photographed what could broadly be termed “the American scene,” whether its people or, more often, the land. One of his latest projects, for instance, involved traveling throughout the United States photographing playgrounds. For an earlier project, supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Freund photographed at gas stations in 47 states. His photographs are constructions created from elements commonplace, immediately recognizable, but somehow unfamiliar.
The artist says that although his photographs begin with an attraction to an event or scene, their larger meaning lies in the relationships he discovers in the surrounding environment and establishes in his frame. The selection of photographs for this exhibition comes from more than ten bodies of work, some comprised of thousands of images. Freund has shaped the exhibition to reflect not only his preferences, but to include works that provide connection and continuity among them.
Freund has exhibited at the Light Gallery, New York and the George Eastman House. His work is included in collections at MOMA, Corcoran Gallery and Bibliotheque Nationale.
This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
