Group Exhibition Explores Theme of Mortality

Ashes to Ashes, a phrase taken from the Christian burial ritual (Book of Common Prayer), is the title of a group exhibition by regional artists exploring the theme of mortality and environmental concerns. The exhibit, which runs from September 2 through October 17 in the George T. Potter Library galleries at Ramapo College of New Jersey, features the work of Fern Bass (Montclair), Pam Cooper (Saddle River), Lori Field (Montclair), Linda Brooks Hirschman (Woodcliff Lake), Karen Nielson-Fried (Montclair) and Elizabeth Seaton (Montclair). Media represented in the exhibit range from fiber to encaustic painting.

The works were inspired by personal loss and by reactions to world events such as the anguish caused by September 11. Our mortal experience is framed by our birth and our death,” says artist Bass. She continues: We know not, really, from whence we come nor whence we will go. We each have just a piece of time and there is no escaping the impermanence. This inspires our dread awareness of our earthly ending, informs our fear of loss of our loved ones and yet, heightens the preciousness of our day to day existence. The sword which hangs overhead/the other shoe that will drop makes the existence in between richer for the uncertainty.”

The George T. Potter Library is open from 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. to midnight on Sunday. For more information, please call 201.684.7147.
