Ramapo College is proud to welcome Rev. Nontombi Naomi Tutu to campus for the Annual Diversity Convocation hosted by the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Compliance (EDIC). Reverend Tutu is a long-time educator, activist, development consultant, and Episcopal priest, whose father was the late South African Civil Rights leader Desmond Tutu. She continues her father’s legacy, speaking and teaching across the United States.

“Just being able to hear and learn from someone who comes from such a historical, legacy leaving family makes this such an exciting opportunity,” said Costin Thampikutty, associate director of campus inclusion and intercultural affairs. “With Reverend Naomi Tutu, your are listening to real, continuing history.” Thampikutty, along with the rest of the EDIC office, has been working tirelessly to coordinate the convocation, as it is one of the crucial traditions that unites the campus. Students, staff, and faculty will gather in the Berrie Center to hear Reverend Tutu speak, just as they gathered last year to listen to Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey Tahesha Way.

This incredible opportunity will allow not only for the community to come together, but will enable the strengthening of Ramapo’s core missions. Equity, diversity, global thinking, and justice lie at the heart of the liberal arts experience, and are crucial to ensuring that each Ramapo alum emerges with a worldly understanding as they enter their careers. “She’s [Tutu] found ways even within different areas of life and faith-based communities to advocate for justice, and I think that goal is within our mission, especially with EDIC and the Multicultural Center,” said Thampikutty.
