Simone Gigliotti
MAHWAH, N.J. – On March 9 at 2 p.m., Simone Gigliotti, senior lecturer and associate professor of Holocaust Studies at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK, will discuss “Spatial Stories: On the Trail of a Holocaust Survivor Cartography” with Sarah Koenig, assistant professor of history at Ramapo College. The program will take place under the auspices of The Gross Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and will be delivered remotely via Zoom. All wishing to attend may register at: https://bit.ly/3FVCooy
For too long, Holocaust survivors’ hand-drawn maps have been marginalized in scholarship about witness representations of lived experience. The so-called era of the witness has advanced written accounts, trial testimony, and oral history as preeminent knowledge of individual persecution, while rarely acknowledging the geo-visual and spatial impulses that have underpinned evidentiary retellings of the Nazi and post-war eras. Gigliotti will reflect on the capacity of digital geo-spatial tools to curate an ideational cartography of Holocaust survivors’ orienting impulses, and unpack the social constructions around creative practice, archival classification, and historical evidence.
Simone Gigliotti is the author and/or co-editor of seven books and many journal articles and book chapters on the Holocaust and its testimonial, spatial and visual representation, and on Nazi-era Central European Jewish refugees and their global trajectories. She is currently finalizing a fully digital and interactive scholarly work, Restless Archive: The Holocaust and the Cinema of the Displaced (Indiana University Press, 2023).
Sarah Koenig has been in the forefront of Ramapo College’s Digital Humanities initiative. She teaches Native American History, and her book, Providence and the Invention of American History, was published last year by Yale University Press.
