MAHWAH, N.J. – The Salameno School of Humanities and Global Studies at Ramapo College presents the lineup for its Italian Language Film Series for the Spring 2018 semester. The films, in conjunction with the Italian Cinema course, will be shown on select Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in ASB-135. Discussions will follow the screenings. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Italian Language Film Series offers Ramapo students an opportunity to experience the innovations that Italian cinema has contributed to the art of movie-making, while also allowing students the option of fulfilling their CEC components. The series, which features iconic directors such as Roberto Rossellini, Lena Wertmuller and Bernardo Bertolucci, allows students to experience the Italian language through film, immersing them in a more visual and interactive method of learning that will aid their overall understanding of Italian.

The films and dates are as follows:

January 24 – Roma Citta Aperta (Rome, Open City, 1945) directed by Roberto Rossellini; set in Rome during the Nazi occupation in 1944.

February 7 – Sedotta E Abbandonata (Seduced and Abandoned, 1963) directed by Pietro Germi; story of a seduction of a 15-year-old Sicilian girl and the mayhem that ensues.

February 21 – Il Conformista (The Conformist, 1970) directed by Bernardo Bertolucci; through a series of flashbacks, the film is a case study in the psychology of conformism and fascism.

March 7 – Cinema Paradiso (1990) directed by Giuseppe Tornatore; a filmmaker recalls his childhood when he fell in love with the movies at his village’s theater and formed a deep friendship with the theater’s projectionist.

March 28 – Ciao, Professore! (1993) directed by Lena Wertmuller; story of an upper-class teacher from conservative northern Italy who, due to computer error, finds himself teaching third-grade truants at a school in impoverished town in the Naples region of southern Italy.

April 11 – Il Postino (The Postman, 1995) directed by Michael Radford; a simple Italian postman learns to love poetry while delivering mail to a famous poet, and he uses this to woo local beauty Beatrice.

April 18 – Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea, 2016) directed by Gianfranco Rossi; capturing life on the island of Lampedusa, the film depicts the frontline in the European migrant crisis.

April 25 – Lasciati Andare (Let Yourself Go, 2017) directed by Francesco Amato; a psychoanalyst goes to the gym and meets a personal trainer who changes his life.
