Mahwah, N.J.  – An exhibition of photographs of the sea by Jonathan Lipkin opens on Wednesday, September 13, in the Pascal Gallery of the Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts. There will be an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. with an artist’s talk at 6:30 p.m. The exhibition continues through October 13.

The exhibition features a recent series of works concentrating on beautiful images of the sea.

Lipkin makes the following statement about his work:

“I spent my childhood at the seashore – in the water, or on the sand listening to the rhythm of the waves as I read or dozed. Over the past five years, I have developed a conceptual and technical framework to respond to the ocean not as it looks, but how it resonates in my mind. I leave the camera’s shutter open for several seconds, then manipulate and combine the resulting photographs into a single image. These I enlarge to monumental-scale prints which match our sublime experience of the ocean’s infinite horizon. Standing back, we take in the grandeur of the image, and on approach ghostly details emerge. The images remind us of the repetitive and stable nature of the ocean.”

Jonathan Lipkin is a photographer, writer and professor of digital media at Ramapo College of New Jersey.  He is author of the books Photography Reborn and In the Realm of the Circuit, and has lectured nationally and internationally on photography and digital media. He lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. with his wife and two daughters.

This project at Ramapo is funded in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. The Pascal Gallery is located in the Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts on the Ramapo College campus. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m.
