MAHWAH, N.J.– Ramapo College’s Center for Innovative & Professional Learning is offering a series of new computer and math camps for high school students this summer. These summer academic enrichment programs include CompTIA A+ Computer Camp, Game Design for Teens, Programming/Data Science Camp, Numerical Analysis Camp, and the online 3-credit Web Site Development course. Information Sessions with program instructors who will cover each of Ramapo’s five computer and math camps for high school students are scheduled in B-218 on April 23, 4-5 p.m. and May 24, 7-8 p.m. Visit the Web page to sign up for upcoming Information Sessions or to register for the programs: www.ramapo.edu/ramapocamps.

Participants in the Game Design for Teens program are introduced to a variety of game design concepts including level construction, character design, and gameplay mechanics using Adobe Animate 2017, Adobe Photoshop, and ActionScript 3.0 to conceive, design and produce functional games for Android and Desktop Apps. The program covers game types such as memory and matching games, as well as platform, 3D first person games, and quiz games. Each student’s culminating project will incorporate personal style with programming. The program offers two sessions: July 10-21 and July 24-August 11.

The CompTIA A+ Computer Camp provides high school students a hands-on experience in gaining the skills and knowledge necessary to install, upgrade, repair, configure, optimize, troubleshoot, and perform preventative maintenance on basic personal computer hardware and operating systems in a home or business setting. Networking and data security are also covered. This camp serves as introductory IT class that, with additional study, prepares students to take professional CompTIA A+ certification exams. The program runs July 10-21.

The Numerical Analysis Camp requires completion of Algebra 2 and comfort with trigonometry prior to attendance. This accelerated class teaches the fundamentals of numerical analysis, the area of mathematics and computer science that designs, analyzes, and implements algorithms for obtaining approximate but accurate numerical solutions to difficult problems. Students practice numerical integration, root-finding, and Euler methods for solving differential equations. Students write programs that use Monte Carlo methods that use random numbers to simulate many random experiments. They solve problems from Project Euler, a collection of puzzles that combine math and programming. The program runs August 14-18.

The Programming/Data Science Camp requires completion of introductory algebra and introduces high school students to the new and fast-growing field of data science in which scientists combine skills in math, statistics, and computer programming to turn raw data into knowledge and insight. Students gain skills in writing, interpreting, and debugging computer code using Python and will use Python to write a web scraper, a utility that gathers information from the web. Students also learn how to use the Python-based SciPy package to display and analyze data. Finally, students use their skills to complete a short but complete data science research project on a topic of their choice. Examples include analyzing traffic patterns to improve traffic flow, finding evidence for a hypothesis in scientific data, and using modeling relationships in online social networks. The program runs August 7-11.

Web Site Development is a pre-college online course for entering high school juniors and seniors. In this introduction to web site development and basic maintenance, students gain hands-on experience in using the latest versions of HTML and CSS with modern editing tools, and learn to enhance web pages with multimedia components such as images, audio, and video. This course appears on a student’s college transcript and, with a grade of “C” or better, equates to 3 credits at Ramapo College (minimally as elective credits). Most higher education institutions will accept the course as transfer credit (check with individual institutions). Students with at least a “C” grade need only two additional courses to earn Ramapo College’s Web Development Certificate.

The Ramapo College of New Jersey summer academic programs for high school students are directed by the College’s Center for Innovative and Professional Learning. The Center supports postgraduate professional education, workforce development, and alternative learning.
