Program focus is “Helping the Struggling Learner”

MAHWAH, N.J. – Ramapo College of New Jersey is hosting the New Jersey Council for Exceptional Children (NJCEC) Spring 2017 Conference on Monday, March 13 in Friends Hall in the Scott Student Center. The event from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. is the premiere special education conference for the state of New Jersey.

The conference will include more than 40 breakout sessions on topics including: Response to Intervention, Gifted and Talented, STEAM, Assessment, Assistive Technology, Legal Issues, Children’s Literature, Pre-School, Math Skills and New Jersey Department of Education Tiered Systems of Support (NJTSS), among others.

More than 300 educators and administrators, as well as four students with special needs who will be receiving scholarships, will be in attendance.

Peggy McDonald, Deputy Chief, Learning Supports and Specialized Services Officer at the New Jersey Department of Education, is keynote speaker. McDonald’s address will provide an overview of the NJTSS, a framework of supports and academic and behavioral interventions to improve student achievement.

Dr. Julie Norflus-Good, Director of the Masters of Arts in Special Education program at Ramapo College, serves as President of the NJCEC.

Their willingness to support the field of Special Education is extraordinary!” said Dr. Norflus-Good. “We are especially thrilled to have Dr. Peggy McDonald as the keynote. This year we are giving scholarships to four high school students. Our goal is to make the New Jersey Special Education community stronger.”
