MAHWAH, N.J. — The final concert in the Open Door Concert Series for the Spring semester will take place on Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. in the Sharp Theater in the Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts. The concert, which is titled “Melancholy and Joy,” is the last of three concerts celebrating the music of Johannes Brahms. It will also include works by Mozart and Ravel.

Itay Goren, the founder and artistic director of the series, will be the soloist and conductor in Mozart’s Piano Concerto in d minor K. 466. It was a favorite of many great musicians throughout history, including Beethoven and Brahms. This performance will feature a 25-member orchestra assembled from some of the finest musicians in the New York metropolitan area.

The second work on the program is Maurice Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro, a composition commissioned by the harp manufacture Érard in Paris to showcase its new pedal harp. The work is scored for harp, flute, clarinet and a string quartet.

Closing the program is one of the most celebrated chamber music pieces in the repertoire, Brahms’ Quintet for Piano and Strings Op. 34. Filled with expansive melodies, explosive rhythms and rich harmonies, the music carries the listener on a vast, emotional journey. The Madison String Quartet, a New Jersey-based ensemble, will be joined by Goren for this performance.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
