Welcome to the Social Work Program at Ramapo College

Are you interested in advocating for social justice, helping people overcome difficult circumstances, or empowering communities and organizations to promote social welfare? Students can do all of this and more with a social work education.

The Social Work Program at Ramapo College provides access to a learning environment that values diversity and professional development. Ramapo’s small community allows for the program to have small class sizes and time for faculty and student interaction. Both the Bachelor and Master level social work programs at Ramapo College are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Social work infuses an unique theoretical perspective in its practice, creating a profession that values diversity, self-determination, and holistic intervention methods. Social work at Ramapo prioritizes its interdisciplinary approach and preparing students through a Generalist Practice framework. The program includes content on three levels of social work in an effort to prepare students to apply their knowledge and skills in diverse settings. Our esteemed Practicum Education Department offers practicum placements at all three levels of practice:

  • Micro-Level Practice: At the micro level, social workers provide one-on-one, family and small-group services to individuals addressing a wide range of social issues. These may include housing support, substance abuse counseling and mental health therapy.
  • Mezzo-Level Practice: Social workers who operate at the mezzo level work with groups of people, such as in a school, prison, hospital or neighborhoods. They may help students struggling academically, address substance abuse recovery with prison inmates or help coordinate care for patients who are admitted to hospitals for long-term care.
  • Macro-Level Practice: Macro-level social work encompasses policy making, research and community based initiatives. Social workers at this level of practice are more likely to focus on and help address larger societal issues like homelessness, substance abuse, housing and more.
