Fulbright Program

Presented by Alanna Diggs, Mecca Slaughter and Dr. Maria Martin

The current state of affairs in the US has communicated that issues of equity and access persist. These issues are ingrained in every level of society and have created obstacles to opportunities, resources, quality education, and transformative experiences for many people of color.  This panel of African American women, who are former Fulbright recipients, will speak to issues of equity and access that affected their level of engagement with the Fulbright organization.  This panel will also discuss the nuanced experience of being ambassadors for a nation that often excludes the Black experience and offers guidance on how Fulbrighters of color can reintegrate into US society after the grant period. Within this conversation, Dr. Martin, Ms. Diggs, and Ms. Slaughter will share their experiences within the Fulbright organization from applying to pre-departure, travel abroad, and returning home to ultimately make recommendations on how the Fulbright organization can make its programs more visible to and inclusive of communities of color.

Moderated by African American Studies professor and Fulbright alumna Dr. Kalenda Eaton, we will explore Dr. Franklin’s life, including his pivotal work, “From Slavery to Freedom” (1947), which forever cemented the integral role of Black Americans in U.S. history, through an intimate conversation with our panelists, historian and son of Dr. Franklin, John Whittington Franklin, and Fulbright alumna, American Studies professor, and former personal assistant to Dr. Franklin, Dr. Nishani Frazier.

How do we ensure diversity, equity and inclusion as we recruit and attract future U.S. student study abroad participants and facilitate an overall empowering experience? This webinar focuses on the importance of how prepared we are, as international educators, to encourage incoming and outgoing students and scholars to reflect on their identity, the local environment and how to navigate an international context that may be distinctly different. This webinar also focuses on practical steps to develop international offerings in an inclusive manner through intentional marketing, comprehensive advising, and tailored student support for Americans studying abroad.

This webinar is part of the “Internationalization of Higher Education in the COVID-19 Era” series jointly organized by the Department of State’s USA Study Abroad branch, the Fulbright Finland Foundation, and the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA). These activities support U.S. study abroad and are funded by the U.S. Government through a Study Abroad Engagement Grant from USA Study Abroad within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State.

The webinar will be recorded and the recording will be made available after the event.
