This two-day remote event aims to inspire and support faculty members wishing to learn about effective remote teaching. The full schedule is included below.

On Day 2, faculty colleagues will showcase best practices and share their successes with engaging assignments, useful ways to deliver content, and effective methods for building community. Day 2 will end with separate focus groups devoted to fieldwork and studio classes.

Engaging Online Assignments and Assessment Strategies

Effective assessment of student learning in a remote learning context poses significant challenges, particularly in an era in which students have instant access to test bank questions and answers with free phone apps such as “Socratic by Google.” The remote environment often requires significant revision and redesign of traditional assessment methods. Faculty members will showcase their best practices for developing effective assessment methods and graded assignments for the online or remote environment.

Engaging Ways to Deliver Content

Panelists: Martha Ecker, Karl Johnson, Ben Neill

In face-to-face courses, in-person interactions serve as the foundation and primary vehicle for effective and engaging communication between faculty and students. Remote contexts therefore require significant adaptation to our typical modes for content delivery and student engagement. In this session, faculty members share their best-practices for effective content delivery when working outside the traditional classroom.

Building Online Community

Panelists: Christina Chung, Julie Fitzgerald, Colleen Martinez

Whether online, or onsite or, somewhere in between, all teaching and learning occurs in the context of a relationship. This can involve the relationship of teacher to student, student to peer, or student to course content. Regardless of the modality, teaching and learning require engagement, and creating a sense of community facilitates these engagement experiences. However, building community online can often be challenging. Join us as faculty members share their best practices for building community in their online and remote courses.
