The African-American Studies minor focuses on Africans and people of African descent within the Diaspora. The minor/contract major is decidedly interdisciplinary, and provides an integrated, content-rich understanding from an Afrocentric world-view tracing the pre-colonial, colonial, and post colonial history of African people. Issues of resistance, struggle toward social and political change, racism and its institutional dynamics, oppression, cultural, literary discourse and scholarship are a few of the salient topical issues. Additionally, the minor encourages students to continue their involvement in Diasporic Studies, and to make strong contributions to an increasingly multicultural American society by remaining proactive members of their learning and outside communities.
