Three alumni will visit to speak to students about their experiences since graduation. Two of these alumni are currently employed by major record labels, the third is a highly successful independent artist.
Visiting Ramapo for a demonstration and Q&A with music students will be Eric “Pik Funk” Smith, a professional bassist who has been accompanying top-tier R&B pop-music artists for the past decade. He is passing through New York while on tour with Janet Jackson.
Having learning music in his church and playing with his father and brother in a gospel trio, Eric moved into the professional music industry. Eric also plays original R&B music with his brother on guitar and other in the band Blynd.
Professor Chris Reali has invited Cesar Comanche to Skype with his Business of Music course. Cesar is an example of an independent artist in the true sense of the phrase; he own the rights to his music, books his own shows, writes his own material, produces his work and the work of others, handles his own promotion, etc. The students will have the opportunity to converse with someone who represents the DIY aesthetic that is increasingly common within today’s music industry.
