Melissa Donovan will screen her award-winning film Zemene and discuss her multiple roles as as director, editor, cinematographer, and producer on the film. Co-sponsored with Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Zemene (USA, 55m) is a feature documentary about a young Ethiopian girl’s bravery in the face of enormous odds. Living in a remote village with a rare curvature of the spine, Zemene struggles with poverty, poor education, and potentially life-threatening illness. But a chance encounter int he street of Gondar with Dr. Rick Hodes sets in motion a series of events that will change Zemene’s life forever. Shot throughout the beautiful countryside of Ethiopia, the film is a poetic testament to the power and bonds of compassion and the potential within us all.

Following a second screening of Zemene, Professor Pat Keeton, communication arts, will lead a discussion of the film, including the multiple roles of the filmmaker Melissa Donovan as director, producer, cinematographer, and editor of this award-winning film. A demonstration of Japanese Noh acting techniques in a workshop setting by guest artist Elizabeth Dowd of the Noh Training Project.

This trip will gather all 5 sections of FYS and will provide exposure to NYC’s Cultural life. This will include a visit to the Metropolitan Museum and a scavenger hunt in Central Park.

 

Berhard Wostheinrich will give lectures to three classes about his unique approach to a career in the music industry through his venture the Reuter-Wostheinrich company, based in Berlin. Berhard’s work spans many areas of interest to students; he is a composer, keyboardist, electronic musician/producer, instrument designer, music manager, and advertising producer. he is active in all of these areas and combines them to create a viable career int he music business. This kind of collaborative Economic Model that combines a variety of activities in a unique way is of great importance to student and could directly influence their approaches tot heir own careers in music.
