Executive Conference Center
1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)

Workshop description:
A way for expressive therapists to use their skills for managing the impact of trauma, resolving conflict, and bringing community together through the power of creativity is working in the international arena of social action. In this daylong master class, a faculty who have worked in countries around the world will discuss and demonstrate—through art experientials—the need for, and benefits of, using expressive art therapies toward these goals. Topics will include: working with at-risk and marginalized populations; the importance of self-care while working in a crisis region; tools for creating safety and resiliency; and ways of providing a strength-based model to empower victims of trauma. Participants will learn about the importance of daily directives, debriefing sessions, managing limits and expectations, and setting strategies for building self-esteem and community cohesion. Discussion will also address the challenges, ethics, and values necessary to do this type of work in addition to the skill set necessary for success. We’ll also explore issues of intercultural learning and cross-cultural competence as we consider sustainability of therapeutic work with populations in crisis and transition.
