April 10, 11, 12, 16, 17 and 18, Sharp Theater, 8 P.M.
Co-directed by Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Rafael Bianciotto and Professor Terra Vandergaw. Banned within a month of its publishing in 1759, Voltaire’s satire, Candide, exposes the futility of war, the folly of utopian “positivity,” and the often corrupt tyranny of the church and the government. In this original adaptation performed in masks with live music, Commedia dell’arte meets the Enlightenment inviting laughter and reflection on the meaning of life and the pursuit of happiness.
