Information Related to Partial Federal Government Shutdown

We are providing this information for our students who may have some questions about how the partial shutdown of some government services and offices may affect their college-related activity and accounts. Ramapo College will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
If you have questions about your specific situation, please contact the relevant Ramapo College office directly.

Financial Aid:

The Department of Education (DOE) has been funded through 2019 (fiscal year). Funding for the majority of federal student aid programs (Pell Grants, Federal Work Study, and SEOG) should continue to be in place and should not be directly impacted.

The only issue, in terms of Federal verification, is that students cannot currently obtain their federal tax return transcript online or put in for the transcript to be mailed to their home. We are working closely with these students on a one-on-one basis to obtain the documents.

Furloughed Federal Employees or Their Eligible Spouses or Dependents

In order to assist furloughed federal employees during the partial government shutdown, Ramapo College is provided the following accommodations. Please contact the specific Ramapo College office listed for more information and assistance.

  • As of January 24, if you are unable to pay your tuition due to the partial shutdown, you will not be charged late fees for unpaid tuition. In addition, if you are de-registered from your classes as a result of this nonpayment, you will not be required to obtain a faculty signature or pay a re-enrollment fee to re-register for your courses. Tuition balances will be due following the end of the partial shutdown. To receive this assistance, please contact the Office of Student Accounts at studentaccts@ramapo.edu with proof of federal employment.
  • Students seeking on-campus housing for 2019-2020, whose parents or spouse are currently furloughed or who are themselves furloughed federal employees, will be granted an extension until May 8, 2019 to submit the $500 housing deposit (which is due February 1, 2019). Please contact the Office of Residence Life at reslife@ramapo.edu for assistance.
  • Any student impacted by the partial shutdown who has a student conduct fine should contact the Office of Student Conduct (201-684-7869) to seek information about financial accommodations.

International Students:

As the majority of the federal government have funding through 2019 and their employees are considered essential government personnel, the immigration-related government functions should be operating normally for now and should not have any impact on our international students, faculty and staff. Hence, student visa processing at the embassies, Inspection functions at the US airports, SEVIS program, F-1 OPT, H-1B petitions are currently not impacted with the shutdown. However, we will be closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as they become available.
