BEHZAD YAGHMAIAN (SSHS), who is currently on sabbatical, is writing a chapter for a book, "The World According to Tomdispatch." Tomdispatch.com has established itself as the go-to blog for contemporary U.S. politics. The book offers readers a chance to catch up on political analysis, including accounts of the two Bush administrations, catastrophic adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq, Guantánamo, Hurricane Katrina, global warming, black gold and the rise of Hugo Chávez.

STUDENT AND ALUMNI NEWS

SUSAN SCHER (SSHS) noted that social work students MARTHA HARRIS, RYAN LEE, JOANNA LEWICKA and ALISON TURKEL have been accepted for the 2008-2009 Child Welfare stipend program. They will receive a tuition and tuition-related fees scholarship from this program in addition to a $5,700 stipend. In exchange, they will take a Child Welfare elective course, participate in a 400-hour internship at N.J. DYFS and work at DYFS for two years after graduation.

Photo: Ruma SenPhoto: Renata GangemiRUMA SEN (CA) announced that graduating seniors from Communication Arts, HOLLY BLANCK, FARIS ELRABIE, and STEFANIE KRUKOWSKI, along with junior BRITTANY CARROLL, presented their competitively selected papers at the Undergraduate Poster Session of the 99th Annual Convention of the Eastern Communication Association in Pittsburgh, PA. Elrabie received the Top Undergraduate Paper Award for "Addressing Indecency:  How FCC Laws are Making a Difference in Network Television."  At this conference, RENATA GANGEMI (CA) and Sen participated in a roundtable discussion on teaching strategies, "Culture Clash in the Classroom:  From Difference to Dialogue."  And at the general business meeting, Sen was honored for her service as program planner for the Intercultural Communication Interest Group.

Sen also announced that a student panel titled "Global Media, Global Spaces, Global Markets:  Student Perspectives on the Complexities of a Globalized World" has been accepted for presentation at the prestigious annual convention of the National Communication Association, in San Diego this November. Panelists are FARIS ELRABIE, VASILENA IVANOVA, JESSICA URBAN, MAUREEN PEARE, HOLLY BLANCK and STEFANIE KRUKOWSKI, all from Communication Arts.
